It can be hard to catch them in action but this one was chomping away this morning!

I brought my kids to my parents’ house so I can attempt to get some work done even though my parents aren’t here right now. Change of scenery, ya know?

Earlier this week I ordered a tripod for my mom so she can get good videos of all her butterfly activity. Within 10 minutes of being here, the tripod was delivered.

I immediately set it up to catch this monarch butterfly eclosing from its chrysalis 😍😍

How’s that for a quick return on my money?! 🤗

This video is 4x speed but still pretty incredible! They pump liquid from their abdomens to their wings to enlarge them to full size. 🐛🦋

Caught this monarch caterpillar pupating into its

Caught this monarch caterpillar pupating into its chrysalis. 😍 I noticed it seemed to be moving a bit in its J and started filming. This active part of the pupating took about seven minutes in real life (but I was recording for over 20!). The kids were here and it was so cool to witness it with them. We’ve raised over 100 caterpillars at least and this is only the second time I’ve caught one in action. Next goal is to hopefully catch one of 40 I’ve got now eclosing out of a chrysalis as a butterfly!

We’ve been checking all the milkweed in our garden almost daily all summer long and FINALLY started finding monarch eggs this week! We found 10 eggs last Saturday and I found 15 more tonight. Buckle up and get ready for more caterpillar and butterfly stories…I’m so excited!
