My sister, Ashley, saved an old side table from the dumpster that her roommates were about to throw out. She successfully sanded, repainted, and gave her “new” old side table a distressed look, and it was wasn’t near as difficult as you may think!
First, she started off by sanding the entire table with a hand sander. It’s not necessary to sand in EVERY nook and cranny – as that would be much more time consuming and it also gives the table a little more texture and personality in the grooves that are missed.
After cleaning off the dust, she completely painted the table.
Once the paint was completely dry (you may want to put on a couple coats), she lightly sanded down the areas she wanted to looked distressed. Mostly around the corners and in the cracks.
After sanding the corners and edges down a bit, she used silver and charcoal colored acrylic paint to coat over the sanded areas to accentuate the distressed look.
You may want to add a layer of polyurathane to seal everything in.
AND THAT’S IT!
The only remotely challenging part of this project would be sanding down the furniture if you don’t own a palm sander. I personally recommend buying one if you’re even a little into DIY projects.
I got mine at Home Depot for $30. They had quite a few to choose from that were between $30-40. In the 3 days since I’ve bought mine, we’ve already used it on 3 projects! It comes in handy for sure!
