Awhile back I talked about how I was going to try eating wheat free. (I failed miserably by the way) My dad was all into the paleo diet and suggested I read two books which I talked about in this post.
Well up until a couple nights ago, I hadn’t touched the books, which might contribute to why I failed at the system.
Anyways, I finally decided to start reading, so for the past two nights I’ve been immersed in “It Starts with Food” by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig.
This book is crazy! (In a good way, that is.)
It will really make you think twice about all the food you’re putting into your body. And it will open your eyes to the fact that most of the time, when we think we’re eating “pretty healthy”, we’re still consuming complete junk that does nothing for our bodies.
I haven’t finished the book yet, despite reading from 5:30 – 10 last night. This weekend I’ll be reading about how to fuel my body with the right things. But so far, I’ve learned a lot about what I don’t want to be eating.
The most fascinating thing I’ve come across so far is their take on milk. I don’t really like milk anyways, so it’s not something I regularly consume, but have you thought about the fact that milk from cows is the same for calves as human breast milk is for infants, complete with growth hormones they need in the beginning stage of life? The following sentence kind of made me laugh because it makes so much sense to me:
“Once they are weaned from breast milk, it simply doesn’t make sense to keep sending children the growth, hormonal, and immune messages they needed when first born – and it’s certainly inappropriate to send them biological messages intended for newborns of a different species.”
This goes for adults too. Why would you want growth hormones intended for baby cows in your body?
Anyways, you should definitely read this book. They explain everything about why you should/shouldn’t eat certain things.
Sorry about the lack of photos on this post. I probably could have gotten pictures of sucking calves on our farm from my dad, but I thought that was a little unnecessary! :)
On a whole other (is it bad that I want to find a grammatically correct way to right “nother” here?) note, I’ll be picking up some Annie Sloan wax tonight so I can get to painting my bedroom furniture this weekend! Yay!! And I’ll be running the color run on Sunday morning, so that should be fun too!
Have a great weekend! Follow me on Instagram for photos of the bedroom furniture in progress! And the race too for that matter!
